  1. A french fry sandwich isn’t the worst thing in the world, but the whole point of a chip butty is that you make it with chip shop chips. They’re wonderful things and they’re different from either french fries or stew fries.

  2. Plenty of place will have a california burrito with fries in the burrito, but there's meat and beans and salsa and cheese in there. Fries are fine to mix into things but they can not carry a sandwich on their own

  4. I have had to eat poor person foods that I will happily deem gross. Some people are just addicted to being upset.

  5. Bu-but your mistake is thinking it’s a French fry sandwich. That would be far too greasy.

Proper thick chips with mayo and ketchup otoh…

  6. The videos online with titles like 'British Children try Texas BBQ for the first time" all have a moment where the child's face lights up because they are experiencing Flavor for the first time ever.

  7. Wait until you hear about Gregg’s and their geordie dummies, or the speciality that is a mince pie scrunched into a large stotty….

  8. I object to the chip butty as well—because of the preemptive trash-goblin shame I feel about knowing, for a certainty, that I would love it. I am a 45-year-old vegan man whose palate sometimes regresses to toddlerhood.

  9. There's a whole business in Pittsburgh that makes sandwiches full of fries and I just don't get it. Are people struggling to eat a side dish and sticking it inside the sandwich is their only solution? I'm incredibly poor, btw, but I still don't get it.

  10. As a certified Britishist, those people should fuck off. Chip butties are awful. It's like sadness you put in your mouth. They know it's awful, too, but they just don't like having someone not British point it out.

  11. French fries are best fresh out of the frier. Any other spot - in between bread or in a burrito - is ruining the fry.

  12. Don't think you hate the poor but it's not a french fry sandwich...very different taste & texture, plus there's butter & salt n vinegar. More akin to the way you can eat great French bread with just a smear of butter, or dip chunks of crusty bread in a decent olive oil, & it be supremely satisfying

  13. I love the Brits trying to defend it by saying they dont use French Fries. They, in fact, use thicker, soggier, mealier, blander fried potato strips.

  14. I will say as a vegetarian who has had to make the fry sandwich at restaurants in the past due to no good options, it's actually not bad. Granted I had like cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes on it.

  15. …I don’t understand how they made that connection at all, and I do like a French fry sandwich (admittedly usually when hungover). Also the best one I ever had was in po’boy form at a hole in the wall joint in New Orleans, so, whatever, Brits.

  16. Ha, I had a British roommate who would spoon canned corn kernels on to her sandwiches while I laughed at her (she mocked me for peanut butter).

But she also taught me to make a fruit crumble, and that was delightful!

  17. People do get very weird about food. I don't think I've ever tried proper french fries in a sandwich as opposed to like chip shop chips. Not sure if you really have them or what you call them. I'm now thinking about actual french fries in a sandwich and wondering what it would be like.

  18. When I went to England, the food was quite literally so bland it actually convinced me I had COVID because I had never experienced eating something devoid of any taste whatsoever.

Turns out I didn’t have COVID. But holy fuck was that an experience

Everyone (who went to Rutgers more than a decade ago) knows that you can't have a french fry sandwich without chicken strips and mozzarella sticks.

  22. I was touring Europe with a French punk band in 1994, and sometimes they would fill a baguette with fries and call it a sandwich. “But that’s starch on starch!” I objected. I ate it, of course, because you take what you can get on a punk rock tour.

  23. Of all the cultural dishes to get mad about. Like, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a chip butty lathered up with sauce and butter, just to make sure my heart really suffers for my hubris... But they're really just okay.

Does the UK know they have Yorkshire pudding? That's a food to feel strongly about!

  24. Probably pretty much every country in the world has some very popular dish that seems just awful to people who are not from there.
