  1. It’s really not appreciated how committed our institutional elites are to making sure there’s never ever another moment like 2020 and the George Floyd protests. They believe this was the lowest point of their lives, they’re embarrassed it happened and they think they fueled/started it.

  2. I think the message is when a politician as ambitious as Newsom sees this as the correct response to Trump, maybe something is stirring in the party at last.

Look, Gavin Newsom is always going to be Gavin Newsom, with everything that implies, but he seems to grasp the reality of what's happening here more clearly than most national figures in the Democratic Party

Newsom: "He doesn't play by a different set of rules. He doesn't believe in the rules. As a consequence, we need to disabuse ourselves of the way things have been done. It's not enough to just hold hands, have a candlelight vigil, talk about way the world should be...we have got to meet fire w/fire"

  4. Occurs to me that Trump's entire regime consolidation strategy is to persuade everyone through displays of force that the regime is already consolidated and there's no point in resisting. Which I don't think will work, but also shows how important public acts of noncompliance are.

  5. Part of the issue for him is that he already gutted the infrastructure and competency that could have delivered this sort of theater.

Another part is that the media that generally enables him, does so by downplaying the fascist and totalitarian nature of these gestures.

    Making them less effective.

  6. Per @daveweigel.bsky.social, the DNC will be debating and possibly voting on two resos this month

One, submitted by DNC chair Ken Martin, calls for ceasefire and two-state solution. (on left)

Other from progressive DNC members calls for arms embargo and recognizing Palestine as a state. (on right)

  9. Americans need to understand you cannot solve a police state by voting alone. We have had rubicon crossing moments almost weekly this summer and the sooner people understand that when those of us on the academic and research side explain that it’s not because we are doomers it’s because it’s reality
