The Air Canada strike was ended by union solidarity and militancy, and also by the Carney government’s intervention being so early and so tin-eared and ham-handed that it made AC admit being saved by arbitration was their whole bargaining strategy. Then it was gone and the strike ended! Lessons!

  1. Government had no choice, but to intervene. You can't leave people stranded at airports around the world trying to get home. That would make them look far worse than forcing the two sides to negotiate.

  2. Also when the gov. said it would probe unpaid hours, AC knew it was cooked.

Who knows why this wasn't done many years ago?

  3. The "Jobs" Minister, and the entire gov't can save face for their appalling failure of workers by passing legislation that puts an end to unpaid work - across all sectors. Also, to call people lawbreakers because they refused to comply with going back to do unpaid work is fucking problematic.

Bargaining in bad faith and forcing a strike two months after a half-billion-dollar share buyback wasn't a great look.

  5. And the lesson being that the government is trying to come after our Charter rights and we won’t let them, right… right?

  6. Plus government statement to "investigate" illegal labor practices. Complete misfire by both Cabinet and AC management. Curious about what the deal actually looks like.

  7. Unions need to WANT to learn the lessons... Talk to PIPSC and PSAC about this and you'll get the "yah yahs" then 🦗🦗🦗 And IMHO what spurred this on is the threat of being nailed for back wages for unpaid work for decades. Remains to be seen if Carney's Gvt will follow through on that.

  8. Big reason was the threat of section 107 getting in front of the Supreme Court of Canada. Neither business or the government want a potential case because it's likely the court will rule it a charter infringement on right to strike and quash it.

That would be huge loss for both.
