Maybe inevitable enshittification online could help some sort of revival on the streets? There is a growing sense of “what have we lost?” but I’m aware that might not be majority view.
I was in my old hometown inthe tun up to Christmas and I was staggered at how quiet it was.

I think retail is forever changed - online is the easiest option for many and there aren’t many towns that can support those “experiential” retailers, where people are prepared to pay for the pleasure of buying there and then (record shop, book shop etc).
Maybe the can dam break though
