Redhead. Texan. Vagabond.

  1. We stopped expanding the House in the 1920s, decided the Supreme Court should freeze in the 1930s, added the last states in the 1950s, amended the Constitution only once in the last fifty years.

The USA and its government continued to grow, but almost all that growth came in the executive branch.

i really think the only reason we haven't created new states — which was a common political tactic in the 19th century, see nevada and the dakotas — is that 50 is a round number

  2. Then a public safety system that treats victims of violent crimes with respect and dignity, that values expertise and training over Peter's Principle, and utilizes members of communities to help prevent harm instead of parachuting in dudes from other towns and neighborhoods.

  3. Why? Somehow the rest of the world figured out how not to do that.

Solutions are holistic. It would include gun control measures, proper training and storage for those with permits, and addressing the economic issues behind most gun crime. And universal healthcare access, including mental health.

  4. Segments? Framed how? Like journalists were murdered, or like journalists labelled a terrorists were killed in a wider attack?

This relates to the coverage and reaction to Jamal Kashoggi's death. It was covered, but not for what it was. Framing matters, time spent matters.

  5. I felt like the comparison to foot traffic and sales of similar retailers was relevant data. It would take study to determine exact causes, but continuing to monitor them vs other retailers would be the best way, no?

We can't prove the Target boycott cost them, but the dates are pretty solid.

  6. The #1 thing that blows my mind about how most people use LLMs: they believe if they ask the LLM a question about how it works or how accurate it is, the LLM will truthfully answer them.

I have seen SO many seemingly-smart people do this.

i don't think it helps that the llms constantly lie to the user about the capabilities of llms as part of its whole obsequious fawning style of interaction that oversells its abilities and obscures its obvious limitations by fundamentally misrepresenting how the technology works
