Hello. The president's continued insistence that the BLS numbers are rigged, political, or otherwise manipulated is a lie. Please stop saying 'baseless claim.' Thank you.

  1. Hey Kai, I'm a former tax preparer for large corporations. I used to complete all the census forms for various companies. # of new hires, total # of employees, sales, cost of sales, net income etc. I've been explaining it to friends, & find most had no idea how economic data is gathered. 🤔

  2. True...Hello ...please name the individuals who refer to Trump's lies as a "baseless claim"....and in fall name all individuals who refuse to call out Trump as a liar (and more) Thank you

  3. We all know unemployment is up..by golly how many layoffs in DC alone and prices on consumer goods is up 30%. He should know what his team has done and doing to our good economy. His dismantling of the US is moving ahead.

  5. For Trump to say that the BLS statistics are rigged is not only a lie, it is a blatant, mindless, obvious lie.

These numbers are almost impossible to manipulate.

    Any half-informed person knows that.

  6. Same with “misrepresented” and similar euphemisms. Call them what they really are. Words matter.

  7. To say they are a lie is a baseless claim. You can explain why it's wrong if you want to, but it's certainly worth the discussion. The wild corrections to the jobs numbers along with super suspicious timing is a bad look.

  8. Yes! Say the word. I cannot fathom why reporters, newspaper writers and editors have such an aversion to clarity. It’s a requirement t of the job!

  9. He can bleat all he wants. I have noticed that even Trump nuts are questioning his” economy.” Price of food, restaurants, gas. Seeing lots of lay-offs…💙🔥😤 #makeamericasaneagain

  10. Lying will not change the facts in this situation. We all will feel the effects of this economy no matter if they tell the truth or not. It's like saying it's a sunny day when it's stormy weather. We all can see the sky, dude...

  11. It’s only making the problem worse, of course.

With one fell & Authoritarian swoop, US economic data is no longer reliable.

  12. Trump is a one trick pony according to him everything that doesn't go his way is "rigged". He is mentally challenged.

  13. After 10 years of Trump on the political stage, the media might have figured out that he and his MAGA followers will never, ever show respect to fair and independent media. If it’s a lie, just call it a lie. Citizens with critical thinking skills will respect you for delivering the plain truth.

  14. This “baseless claim” or that he’s saying something “without evidence” drives me nuts. Thanks for calling it out for what it is - a lie

  15. Well said. Trump took a very strong economy and trashed it by making incompetent decisions and embracing archaic policies. Now he's not man enough or mentally capable of accepting that he has failed miserably. He has to blame someone, anyone, but himself.

  16. Please tell your colleagues at NPR that. They keep trying to both sides everything and it’s disgusting.

  17. Of course their estimates would be wrong by a wider margin than usual, Trump has tried to destroy 40 years of systemic economic progress, and replace it with his whims.

  19. I’m with you 100%. The press dances around Trump all the time. He tells lies. Say so. “Trump lied today when he said……” Treating his lies like they’re just personal opinions drives me bats.

  20. So you have professional people who have been doing the numbers for years, and now that you don't like the numbers it's a baseless claim, and you fire them. That's like shoplifting because an item didn't have a price tag on it, and claiming it was free.

  21. They were not rigged the numbers are low the economy is tanking open your eyes and stop believing when they try to do damage control

  22. You heard the man..... I mean, he DID say, "Please.".... Now do something that can motivate him to say, "Thank you.". Please.....

  23. A close second is when NPR (or whoever) says things like "How Gov. Abbott would remove Democrats from their elected office is unclear." It's not flat wrong, but it gives far too short shrift to there being precious little actual path to do it. It's not really "unclear", it's just bluster!!

  24. Trump's claim is false. US CPI shows prices rose ~24% cumulatively from 2020 to 2025. June 2025 inflation: 2.7% YoY overall, 2.4% for groceries—still increasing, not decreasing. Energy dipped 0.8% YoY. Stocks did surge: S&P 500 up ~69% since end-2020. Sources: BLS, Trading Economics.

  25. My kids were both Journalism majors and the way I understand it, you can’t report someone is lying unless you, reporter, can get into their head and know that the person has intent to lie, so you can’t report that as fact. You can only report that what he/she is saying is a false statement.

  26. America Seems to be experiencing a faulty circuit. Turn OFF. Check manual (Constitution) Reset the God & Country Myth (GCM) Apply a sharp force or knife to the American Dream Network (FOX). Wait a minute then Turn ON . If this fails send PONTUS to Siberia for a full test (literacy/mental etc)🇦🇺🦘🙄🥺

  27. The BLS has been a nonpartisan institution across administrations. Undermining it damages public trust in facts — not just politics.

  28. As one hears in court, false statements “go to credibility.” Donnie’s emissions are chum to those expressing righteous indignation and ADD news cycles. If his lips are moving (or gawping), just say “that’s nice” and move on. Use “lying” liberally instead of gussied up terms.

  29. Their dishonest approach to his lies is a lie in and of itself.

These aren't claims for which Trump "offered no proof." They aren't assertions that "may be wrong." And they certainly aren't "baseless claims." 😂

EVERY STATEMENT from Trump should be assumed to be a lie unless proven otherwise.

  30. dump will tell us whatever number he wants. if you are unemployed, can't feed your family, are not getting SNAP, aren't getting Medicare coverage, you know damn well he is lying to all of America. Wake up he has lied to us all since the day he was in his 20s.

  32. Thank you! Been saying that forever. Just call it a lie and stop watering down what he's doing by calling a "baseless claim" or "claim without evidence." We all know what it is and what he's doing.

  33. When is media, any media, going to hold him accountable? Where is the proof the election was rigged? Where is the proof the jobs numbers were fake? How did they rig the election? How did they rig the job numbers? What are the real job numbers? This isn't hard! Even Rogan can ask these questions!

  34. One of the best analogies I've heard: he steps on the scale, doesn't like what it says he weighs, and throws it out until he can find one that provides a number he likes.

  35. Sorry, Kai. Trump is a compulsive liar who doesn't remember what he said an hour ago, let alone yesterday. He is in decline and will continue to say baseless things continually. Sad, frustrating, irritating, but that is the way it is for this loser.

    1
  36. but your own network, that you are a top-paid thought leader in, has a policy not to ever use the word “lie”, owing to an incorrect believe that intention to deceive is required.

why can’t you folks talk about this in the editors room?

    0
  37. Seriously, this is not like “question authority”. Do not trust anything this administration authors.

  38. A board of 40 finance governors determine the numbers and the BLS head delivers the news, so Trump is cutting the head off of one because of the calculations of others. Just saying Trump is killing the messenger is not enough. He is a blatant tantrum throwing liar.

  39. To some small but real degree, the continuation of the dollar as the world's reserve currency depends upon everyone understanding this point

  40. THANK YOU for saying so Kai !!!

Us regular people need public figures, leaders, those with a platform, audience, etc to be doing this vociferously.

BTW, Marketplace is a phenomenal program and public svc. 🙏

  41. Gotta back up some of the other replies here; "lie" and "baseless claim" are different, because one denotes intentional deception and the other denotes just saying shit because you don't know better and don't care to find out. And they're arguably just as bad, for different reasons.

  42. 🙌🙌🙌 Baseless claim makes it sound like he may have honestly heard something untrue and repeated it, when in fact he is the source of the lie.

  43. I really do understand why the media at times is hesitant to call a spade a spade, but there's a point where they just need to do it.

Yes calling something a lie in print that isn't is libel, but calling a clear lie baseless is lending it too much credibility.
