I lost my faith in humanity when I found out there are people out there who don't know how to cook rice.

  1. I look it up every time if it’s been a while since I last cooked it.

I promise I’m not stupid, but with rice you can screw it up with just a minor error in ratios or time.

  2. Is it acceptable to bring excess water (6 cups sorta) to boil, add rice and then just drain out the water when cooked. Or 1:2 rice water?

  3. Bro. I am one of them. I can cook jasmine rice fine. But white rice, never works. It also tastes like shit so I’m okay with it.

  4. Still remember a class mate who at the age of 18 didn’t know that spaghettis are hard before you boil them (and no there was no fancy fresh pasta on the supermarket shelves in the 1980s).

  5. wait until people learn that Persians have brought the art of rice cookery to the next level. Chicken Biryani done right is just astoundingly flavorful. most cultures have rice and they all cook it a little (or a lot) differently.

  6. Well Actually, there are many, many different ways to cook rice. but yes go ahead I’m just being a semantic PITA. I was a chef, the number of times I have been to someones house and the don’t have a sharp knife is ridiculous. you don’t need a $800 300mm Sushi knife, and please don’t get a Ginsu.

  7. I once found my father trying to heat a can of beans on the stove - without having opened the can. Whaaa?

  8. What confuses me are all the people who think cooking rice is difficult. The only steps are boil, simmer and DO NOT TOUCH.

I'm not gate keeping rice cookers. Those are good too.

(Had leftover chicken & rice for dinner.)

  9. Look. I can make rice using multiple techniques. I make flawless eggs in many formats. I have sourdough starter that I’ve nursed for five years through moves. Most importantly, I taught middle school English. They gave me hope and I found joy in

  10. Growing up in the low country of South Carolina you learn to cook sticky rice before kindergarten. It’s a law. I sure of it. Perlo is a staple in my house. ❤️

  11. Can I just say, I did not know until recently ( I am 70) that to cook Jasmine Rice and Basmati rice the water ratio is different for them. I wish Recipe Tin Eats had been around when I first learnt to cook.

  12. hehehe reminds me of the memoirs of the WRENS assigned to Bletchley Park - a lot of them were aristoDaughters who embarrassed themselves when tasked with tasks like "boil kettle, make tea"

  13. Ya. Here you go: In a deep pot add 1 cup of rice to 1.5 cups (scalable) of water. Bring to a boil covered and remove from heat. Let it stand for 15 minutes, uncover, fluff and let it stand for another couple of minutes. Bang Zoom perfect rice every time. Sticky rice may be a bit different. Anyone?

I could tell the story about the first time I tried to cook "sticky rice" - high gluten local variety. It is soaked a few hours and then steamed.

  15. The secret to rice is to add water as you go as to not cause it to become sticky and gummy..... Make sure to pick up one or two grains on a spoon to test for tenderness then strain and rinse again once done!!!! Voila

If you let all the water boil out, it's gonna be mushy. You want fluffy!!!

  16. There are also people who don't know how to make toast. Toast! Everyone needs to realize cooking for loved ones everyday is a huge labor of love. I have cooked 3 times a day for 20 plus years for a family of 4. Many, many, many days, I cannot summon the strength. But I do, out of love!

  17. I’m sad to say: I am one of those. No matter WHAT I’ve tried, nothing has worked. Even in a rice cooker. I rinse in cool water. I use the correct water:rice ratio (2:1). I cover and leave it be. I’ve tried long grain, short grain, jasmine. Same result: ALWAYS soggy. Never once fluffy. I’ve given up.

  18. Had a whole fight about this because someone wanted to buy instant rice for our facility because it was easier, I’m like how much easier can rice get? Then, I experienced a rice cooker and found out.

  19. So easy! Half a cup of white rice, three litres of water, boil for one to two hours. Add a bar of chocolate if you want brown rice instead in the last half hour.

  22. I lost mine when more than one person revealed they thought rice was made out of wheat. “What’s it made of then?” Its made of rice. Which is a plant. Called rice.

  24. Mine is only perfect about 50% of the time. The other 50%, either gritty or mush. I have zero patience and can't resist lifting the lid to peek.

  25. What kind of rice are we talking about? Rice and peas, arroz con pollo, arroz con gandules, yellow rice, Mexican red rice. All I can do is make white rice, whereas my wife can make Mexican rice better than most restaurants, and nobody made better arroz con gandules than my Mom.

  26. My GF has a tiny rice cooker that she loves but it doesn't make enough rice.

I said why not just make it in a larger pot and she said:

"With this I just have put the rice and water in it and it cooks itself and in 20mins it's done!"

  28. whilst I cooks a fine Rice,..I still blew $20 on a Rice Cooker, because, I like mine with just a hint of that scorchy brown layer on bottom,..and keeping it warm is priceless. I am a member of the "Got'sa Wok" club.

  29. PERFECT RICE, using rice with a 2-to-1 water-to-rice ratio and 20 minutes cooking time.

-Add salt to water if desired. -Bring water to a FULL boil. -Reduce burner to lowest setting. -Add rice; cover. -Cook 20 minutes.

Stickiness is controlled by adjusting amount of water and cooking time.
