  1. There was a lot of bad going on in the 80s and 90s. Unlike now, crime was actually bad. The 30 year decline in violent crime that keeps being ignored started in the early 2000s. There was an AIDS pandemic that Republicans were (shockingly) on the wrong side of then too. Lots of fear and homophobia.
