Apparently, inflation is bad, but we must impose tariffs to raise the cost of cheap imports so people buy expensive American goods. We can re-shore manufacturing, but to be cost competitive, we have to fully automate factories, replacing American workers with robots.

Replies

  1. In a fully automated industrial economy, there will still be jobs for fixing and programming robots, which is somehow different from the economy we have today, where engineers make a lot of money and other types of workers don't.

  2. Yeah. At 42. Heard all of this before, and it is still wrong. Backward as well and very asinine. WE, "the people, need high paying jobs but Reagan and Bush Sr said "you don't want to work those jobs." So they sent them to another country. It what happens when greed and arrogance takes over.

  5. Automation of manufacturing jobs was the conversation everyone was having in the 1990s. It’s extremely disingenuous of these senior legislators to pretend that whole era of discussion never happened, to promise the return of manufacturing jobs that they know will not exist.

  6. Real clever economics. Cut wages and increase prices to build a consumer economy on local manufactures.

  7. Of course the ONE DAY Donald Trump listened in class at Wharton was the day his professor broached the subject of tariffs. Too bad he didn't make it or pay attention the next class that covered the disaster tariffs caused in the 1930s!

  8. And we must impose tariffs on materials required to build/expand/modernize said domestic plants—increasing construction costs while also keeping wages competitive and prices at affordable levels for consumers-but also enough profit for financiers…what could go wrong? 🤷🏼‍♀️

  9. We are going to be 20 yrs behind every other country. It will take decades to fix what Trump and GOP have done. Any bets on how fast after that their stupid base will be back on the circus train?

    2
  10. Hhmmm! Just about right as Lutnick, Trumps Sec of Commerce, with joy in his face, described it.

  11. The disconnect is their refusal to add universal basic income into the mix as a way of returning the tariff revenue in a way that increases buying power for most people to afford the tariff prices, and boosts incomes to counter the wage depression of automation.

  12. And now, do you understand why they are making for-profit prisons, stripping our constitutional rights away while making homelessness illegal. When the population is replaced by automation and AI, there will be an uprising, and the only right you will have is slave labor in the for-profit prisons.

  13. The greater irony, the very same oligarchy who outsourced American manufacturing/jobs to increase their profit margin… because enough is never enough…is supposedly going to bring those jobs back.

  15. Inflation is only bad when child raping Republicans need to whip their zombie army of magats into a frenzy. We all know the kids starving and being raped and dumped into extreme poverty illicit no feelings from them. But their nazi god have mercy on your soul if they can't buy cheap baconators

  16. The 're-shoring' will be long slow and expensive.... trump tariffs will be ruled illegal and removed... And business will continue with more of the same

Who is going to build a new factory, hire and train workers and slip 5 years behind their competitors on the ramblings of a certifiable lunatic ?

  17. You know petty theft is going to ballistic right?

Why buy an expensive import when you can steal one that already in the country.

I’m guessing car parts electronics and components are going to be on that list and then of course, food.

Specialty foods theft is big business in Europe.

  19. To sort it, one must ask, how does this action shovel more money in the pockets of the ultra-rich?

Assuming the current gang thinks like the most unscrupulous corporate predators clarifies matters. They will gladly destroy whatever organization they control if it means more in their own pockets.

    1
  20. Or we could tax American businesses and use those funds to pay for universal health care, so that workers don't have to make more and have it taken out of their pockets by private insurance.

    Just a thought.

Force women to have more ba-, er, workers and let them sink or swim as they will

    #RepublicanImportTaxes

Because it’s not just Donald Trump, Congress is responsible for this but GOP cowards refused to take their responsibility seriously, afraid of Trump

So important to remind voters that they are #RepublicanImportTaxes

    Make them own them

  24. The absolutely hilarious thing is broad based global tariffs and a belief that all trade deficits are bad are 100% Trump obsessions. The only reason the GOP is going along w/ these clearly disastrous assumptions is because the MAGA cult of personality just happens to have Trump at the head.

  25. Yes and big gigantic companies can afford to make less - to keep things affordable and even pay their workers properly. But instead we hear, “we have to stay competitive” while also hearing “Company A posted $19 billion in profit this year.” America is a scam.

  26. Why should we pay more for necessities due to tariffs when Americans can’t make these products.

We eat as much as rich people. We drive as much as rich people. We need meds as much as rich people. Why should we pay more as a percentage of our income for necessities. Tariffs are a tax.

  27. When I was growing up, there were steel mills up and down the Ohio River for miles. Not only are those steel mills shut down now, they've all been torn down. The train tracks that were used to run loads of coal and other materials are gone. It would take years to replace all that.

  28. The weird thing is they will acknowledge inflation is bad then in the same breathe go "and we are gonna impose tariffs that'll increase the cost of goods!" Not realizing that that's literally feeding into inflation

Trump is a fucking moron; none of what you suggest in on his radar.

  33. look it's simple: the tariffs will make people will buy American goods instead of foreign goods, thus reshoring manufacturing. But they will also still buy foreign goods at the same or greater rates, so we can use tariffs to lower the deficit and replace the income tax.

  34. Hence the need to kill off anyone unable to work by defunding Medicare. And eliminate SNAP, vaccines and safe drinking water regs too, so only the fittest survive. Culling the herd to only billionaires and a handful of useful serfs.

  35. It is almost like all that "American manufacturing" was just slave labor and actual slaves.

As soon as companies could outsource to China, the North Carolina furniture industry -cratered-. The bosses still lived there, with the unemployed workers' as their communities decayed.

  37. Facts.. now to do those other jobs, of which there will be fewer, you are going to need much higher skill levels. Also in the race to robotise the economy there is one place where the US leads. Wall Street. Not main street and not manufacturing.. not even close

    1
  38. You forgot the part about "we must impose tariffs to raise the cost of cheap imports, but we expect the companies selling those imports to eat the cost of the tariffs and NOT raise prices, so that people will uh... uh... continue to buy them instead of expensive American goods."

    0
  39. Just wait until fruit and vegetables are cheaper when imported, due to no field workers!

    2
  40. Or, if you’re a car manufacturer, invest in European manufacturing as it’s cheaper to pay the 15% tariff on completed cars than it is to manufacture here and pay 50% tariffs on steel.

  41. Inflation impacts employers forced to lay off workers to keep high profits. Unemployment + decline in GDP + rising Inflation that can't be brought down that also means can't lower interest rates that will cause inflation to also rise, inversely to inflation, is STATFLATION, RECESSION & DEPRESSION

  42. It depends on who you are...if you're The People, yes, Inflation is the enemy

If you're trying to BANKRUPT The People, let's say you're the Criminal POTUS getting rich & fulfilling bribes w/ market manipulation for Insider Trading, Tariffs are good. Inflation is still bad for $ value, not if rich

Yes. Prices are skyrocketing under Trump. The data is clear: new U.S. tariffs are directly fueling inflation, hitting your wallet hard. From groceries to goods, Americans are paying more as import taxes soar from 2.5% to 17.5% on average. The "great deal maker" promised better.

Prices are soaring. Tariffs and inflation are impacting your budget across the nation and what it means for the economy.. Here's why.

Increasing the age for Social Security to never Child labor from 10 years old Grandad and Grandma goes back to work until they die The disabled will be 're-qualified' to work

You know who is not going to work? The people making the new rules.

  46. Except that the robots themselves will come from China and be tariffed. Those same robots will also be used in Chinese factories at 1/7 the wages for the robot managing human workers so the goods will still be considerably cheaper even after shipping and tariffs.

  47. There used to be a saying, “The stupid, it’s burns.”

But maybe we’ve been going about this all wrong. Maybe it should be, “The logic, it burns.”

On account of the fact that they’ve really doubled down on the stupid.

  49. Begin by throwing everything out, then apply your plan, which remains half-baked because you expect to discover its flaws as it unfolds, since that seems to you more efficient than trialing in small areas, improving the plan and then expanding it, while everything otherwise continues working.

  50. Right wingers suddenly want to bring back American manufacturing, but they still don’t want to pay American workers. They’re also kidnapping people off the street and shipping them to torturous labor camps. The only way to square that particular circle is that they want to bring back slavery.

You forgot to add that to avoid social disturbance, after we fully automate factories we need to deport, force to leave, and force the elderly/disabled to depart from this life prematurely in order to reduce most of the population! Robots need no wages, no food, they obey, they work and they fight!

  52. We have tariffs because yesterday the orange idiot literally said "it's what these countries will have to pay to do business with us." And apparently NO ONE can get him off that lie.

  54. And when American workers lose jobs due to companies replacing them with robots, the unemployed American workers will not be able to afford these goods. So much winning!

  55. FAFO time for Redhats. MAGAts supported Elon who helped Trump win the WH. Elon first cut their benifits via DOGE and will replace their jobs with Optimus robot. 😬

  56. The best part about this is NONE of it is feasible. Building a new manufacturing plant is such a huge investment even for mega corporations. There is no “fully automated” process, not even close. mostly automated requires 4-5X the number of maintenance and electricians that there aren’t enough of.

  59. I've been shouting about this for ages.

Trump goes on about having manufacturing brought back to America to create jobs.

He obviously hasn't set foot in a modern factory.

They are full of robots, not people.

He has no idea. He's just an ignorant dipstick

    1
  60. I have said this before, but I think Trump’s idea is to turn the US into one big vacation resort and kick everyone else out who hasn’t bought tickets. All goods are Disney gift shop prices. You have a few local guys to mow the grass and rake the forest. Gotta pay with Disney dollars. Etc.

  61. And the fabric that tethered the most peaceful time period in human history, free and fair global trade, has been all but destroyed.

eliminate the need for human consumers and you have a perfect reality where everyone else is dead and a bunch of dipshits are very rich.

  64. Wait till you hear how The Fed decided to fight corporate price gouging under Biden by calling it “inflation” and raising interest rates (and thus the cost of everything) while the GOP refused to stop the gouging and also blamed Biden while the billionaire-owned media cheered.
